  • Overview of the course

    Painters and Decorators operate in domestic and commercial properties and undertake the decoration and protection of buildings. Properties include houses, schools, offices, hospitals factories and construction sites. Working internally or externally they work individually and/or as part of a team applying water-borne and/or solvent-borne paint coatings and wallcoverings. They have good knowledge of paint coatings and wallcoverings and understand and comply with statutory, safety and environmental requirements.
    They are responsible for their own work, achieving a high-quality finish at the appropriate pace. They are good problem-solvers and communicators and are able to interact effectively with colleagues, clients and associated trades.

  • What you'll learn

    more less
    Prepare the work area safely providing dust sheets and protection to furniture and adjacent surfaces
    • Identify hazards and risks in the workplace ensuring a safe environment is maintained at all times
    • Select, use, maintain and store: paint, tools, wallcoverings, spray equipment, steps, ladders and towers safely
    • Follow and maintain work procedures and method statements
    • Prepare and strip surfaces using abrasives, chemical etchants, power sanders, heat and liquid methods
    • Understand and apply powder, two-pack, surfacers and resin fillers
    • Use different application methods: brush, roller, spray, power-assisted rollers and special effect tools
    • Wallpaper using techniques for the hanging of lining paper, standard papers, digital print and wide width including matching patterns, internal and external corners
    • Understanding work methods, customer needs, the building industry, products and services

    80% of your qualification will be gained in the workplace, although you may attend sessions in College that will cover the remaining essential areas of your training.

    During your Apprenticeship, you will have a dedicated Work Based Tutor who will train you to industry standards; support your time in employment; and coach you to pass your End Point Assessment.
  • Entry requirements

    There are no formal entry requirements but apprentices need:
    • A strong work ethic and be motivated, reliable and adaptable
    • An attention to detail, quality and continuous improvement
    • A customer focused attitude
    • Effective communication skills
    Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 English and Maths prior to taking the end point assessment.
  • How will I be assessed?

    The end-point assessment (EPA) will assess how an apprentice can apply their skills, knowledge and behaviours acquired in their Apprenticeship, through the following three assessments:
    • Knowledge test - (this test will consist of multiple choice questions)
    • Skills test
    • Professional discussion

    Alongside your studies, you’ll have a unique opportunity to be part of the University of 91ߣɫ’s EXCEED Programme.

    This will give you a range of additional skills and experiences, and includes masterclasses; university visits; access to industry experts; and mentoring and support with your university application, perfect for that next step into Higher Education.

    On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level. As a result of achieving the Apprenticeship, there will be an entitlement to join the Federation of Master Builders’ continuous professional development (CPD) scheme for individual tradespeople.

    With experience, you could become a Team Supervisor or move into related areas like estimating, contract management, interior or set design. You could also work in heritage conservation, or set up your own business.
    Following further study you could work as:
    • A Painter and Decorator, earning between £16,000 and £28,000 a year, depending on experience.
    • A French Polisher, earning between £13,000 and £30,000 a year.
    • A Handyperson, earning between £13,000 and £23,000 a year.
